Two weeks since the earthquakes

“One month has now passed since the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, which impacted everyone deeply. The official loss of life announced as of now is 45,968, with more than 100,000 Turks injured.”

This is from a recent report of a believing Turk who is on the front lines, helping with the earthquake recovery.

For many in Canada and other locations, we are mostly looking out the window of our warm homes wondering when the snow will melt. In Turkey, they are looking around their cold temporary tent wondering where they can get a hot meal and use of sanitation facilities. I was talking to a friend recently about the earthquake and as we spoke she looked up the death tolls from recent earthquakes in Nepal and Japan. In Nepal in 2015 the earthquake killed 8,964 people; in Japan in 2011, 20,000 people died. As you can see from the previous report the Turkey earthquake has claimed even more lives than those tragic earthquakes.

It really has been a big effort in Turkey these past four weeks to help the displaced people. Many have rallied to help by sacrificing their time and sharing belongings.  Currently, a lot of the work is in ensuring that temporary shelters and kitchens are operational.  Others are doing practical things like serving in the community kitchens for those who are displaced.  This recovery is going to take many years.

Our mandate at People International Canada is to gather funds to channel into recovery efforts. Not just today, but in the coming months. Will you consider making a donation today?
